Thousands rally in support of maryborough hospital for the family of James Ward
Hundreds of people gathered at the hospital to mark the end of James Ward's life by standing against what they said was a hospital's treatment of his mother and sister.
Ward was born with a rare and severe heart defect that meant he could never walk or use his hands. His parents, Tony and Karen Ward, and mother Ann did everything in their power to have him taken by private health workers for life.
At their son's end, Tony Ward said: "If you put him in the hospital and told me he would make a good man again, I wouldn't give a penny for a hospital.
"The medical team in those days were like sheep. They got to them first."
It was a tragic event - a tragedy of love. The Ward family's support of the hospital, which became a centre of political activism, has been central to the hospital's survival and its recovery.
Ward was taken to the ward for surgery and had a scan for a defect in his heart that led to an emergency operation in March 2006 to remove an organ from the wall of his heart and remove a section of heart valve from its surface.

Tony Ward said: "You can't control what a parent does for their baby and say it's in the best interests of that baby to die. It's very sad when I look at my son and think that I could have been a better parent if he hadn't had a medical operation.
"I never wanted my son to go through that and I will never let go of that, so there are no words to express the loss we feel for James and for his family."
After his death, the Ward family received much publicity, especially from the pro-life movement and from former Labour MP Margaret Rayner. He went on to be a supporter of Labour from 1997 until 2005.
Dr Melling says he regrets that "there was no concerted, international campaign to bring an end to hospitalised children in the UK" and that his committee had no role in it, but the hospital has now opened a dedicated "palliative care department" for ward patients which will focus on their families.
