New figures show 250 australians developing dementia every day, with the majority of cases going untreated.
Diseases such as motor neurone disease (MND), motor neuron disease (MND), Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) were the top ten causes of death in 2014.
Despite all this it is thought that Australia will see more cases of the disease, even if the numbers are not too high, said Prof Steve Beecroft, senior consultant paediatrician at Melbourne's St Vincent's hospital.
''The biggest cause of death in Australia now is MND, I don't think there is much we can do about that,'' Dr Beecroft said.
''The brain does not appear to be immune to the ravages of ageing or any diseases of ageing.
''We have one of the world's highest rates of Parkinson's disease in Australia.''
Experts at Melbourne's St Vincent's Health Care centre have identified a combination of factors that contribute to dementia among the elderly.
Dr Beecroft said that although there was no cure, a long-term strategy for managing a variety of conditions would be necessary, to avoid a large number of people developing dementia.
''People with Alzheimer's disease develop dementia because the mind gets trapped in a process of forgetting as it ages,'' he said.
''You will have a large number of people with brain deterioration because they have a condition called Alzheimer's disease, which causes this brain malfunction.
''MND can take a very long time to develop but once you have MND you are very much at risk for developing dementia.''
MND is caused by a condition known as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease which is caused by an abnormal type of protein called Creutzfeldt–Jakob Disease Agenovirus, or CJD.
The protein triggers a number of other abnormalities in the brain and other organs.
If the protein is undetectable, MND can cause people to lose awareness of the body's problems but can cause them to become agitated and make threats.
'Pupil-dependent'
Dr Beecroft's research and research projects in the US have identified evidence that the brain's own immune system attacks healthy cells, triggering an attack in the brain's hippocampus, the part of the brain associated with memory formation.
He said the findings suggested the brain's own immune system could target the healthy brain tissue in an attempt to kill it, but this strategy had not yet been developed by scientists.
''In adults, this kind of attack may be very strong, in children it may not have much effect,'' Dr Beecroft said.
